Darklight by Bella Forrest

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

Book #1 of "Darklight" series.

Rating: 5/5

Spoiler Alert: Low

Summary:

"Vampires don’t exist. At least, not anymore..."

I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct.

Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night—where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware.

But the end of vampires wasn’t the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

Other blood-sucking creatures began to lurk in the night. As soon as I turned twenty-one, I became a ground agent at the Bureau because I wanted—no, needed—to join the fight.

And then Dorian Clave burst into my life—turning everything I thought I knew into quicksand. Vampires like him were killers who devoured humanity’s inner darkness until shadows danced beneath their skin. Yet there was more to him than that.

He showed me that light cannot exist without the dark, and that trying to fight this balance would have consequences our human minds couldn’t even comprehend.

Because sometimes darkness needs to exist.

Praises:

Plot:

OH MY GAWD. If this isn't the coolest vampire story ever, then I don't know what is. I AM SHOOK. One cold evening, I was browsing through my e-reader for books to read, and I stumbled upon Darklight. That evening was yesterday. And oh boy! It did not disappoint. The plot for this book is probably one of the most interesting ones I've read this year. It gives me the biggest Twilight vibes ever, but it's a completely different story. So basically, we're in a world where vampires are seen to be extinct, and these new monsters, "redbills," have taken over the world. Humans have hunted vampires, but with the vampires gone, they are hunting the "redbills" instead. Now, here comes the plot twist...THE VAMPIRES ARE STILL ALIVE. That's all I'm going to say about the plot. My lips are sealed.

Characters:

The characters in this book are quite interesting.

First, we have Lyra, who is the main character. She is a human and comes from a family of vampire hunters. However, when Lyra was a teenager, vampires suddenly disappeared. As a result, instead of training to hunt vampires, she trains to hunt "redbills". I'm just going to say it...Lyra is a total kick-ass and brave character. In fact, she is the First Lieutenant, which clearly shows how strong and smart she is. Add in her great sense of humour and sarcasm, and we have a fun but deadly heroine.

The other main character is Dorian. He is a vampire and comes in a bit later in the book. I would say he appears 25% into the story. Anyways, Dorian is a very complex character who's super mysterious. The guy—err, I mean vampire—is incredibly stoic, and he does not reveal his emotions at all. Okay, I'm kind of exaggerating. He shows his emotions roughly five times in the book. It's super clear that Dorian is a very sharp character, struggling with many external and internal conflicts. As a vampire, he and his clan are feared and discriminated against by humans. But in reality, Dorian just wants to live in peace and save the vampire race from going fully extinct.

Narration/Writing Style:

Forrest has created a very unique world with so many three-dimensional characters. Her writing style is phenomenal and engaging to read. This is because Forrest has the ability to describe the world and the characters in such great detail, easily allowing me to picture what everything and everyone looks like. Darklight is written in first person, which is obviously the best narrative format ever. It is told from Lyra's perspective, and I really enjoy reading her struggles, feelings, and how she perceives the world she lives in. Forrest, you are a legend for creating a clever and creative storyline.

Critics:

I feel like I've been giving every book 5/5 with no critics, including this book. Sorry for those who wanted critics!

Final Review:

Darklight is definitely a more adult book with so many twists and turns. I finished this book so fast in one sitting, and I'm about to start the second book. Every single aspect is just so creative, and I wonder how on earth does Forrest come up with this plot. Was she just strolling down the street one day and happened to come up with this brilliant idea to write an unbelievable vampire story? I honestly have no idea. Okay, moving on from my curious mind...I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT recommend Darklight to all the adults out there.

P.S. I ship Lyra and Dorian so hard.

Happy Reading!

Cheers,

Jessica :)
