Book #2 of "Six of Crows Trilogy"
Rating: 5/5
Spoiler Alert: Low
Summary:
Welcome to the world of the Grisha.
Kaz Brekker and his crew of deadly outcasts have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn't think they'd survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they're right back to fighting for their lives.
Double-crossed and badly weakened, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz's cunning and test the team's fragile loyalties.
A war will be waged on the city's dark and twisting streets - a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world.
Praises:
Plot:
I'm going to keep this short and sweet. The plot is captivating and suspenseful. There is so much action in the story as well as a romance. Every single action scene is heart-pounding and you're basically reading so fast (or slow) to see what comes next. I absolutely loved the plot... complex yet super interesting.
Characters:
I have so many good things to say about the characters in this book. The character development from the first book to the end of the second book is AMAZING. We get to see growth and every single character.
We have six characters:
Kaz: He is fantastic. I consider him an anti-hero because he seems to be around the morally black area as a protagonist. We see so much growth from the beginning of the book to the end. Kaz is a super interesting character and I love his romantic relationship with Inej. They work so well together. (Although, Kaz is a bit crazy sometimes if not most of the time.)
Inej: Inej is an incredibly strong character. She's fearless and brave and we see her develop so much. Her relationship with Kaz really helps her develop control and she helps Kaz become less crazy. A total badass.
Wylan: Wylan is super different from all the other characters because he comes off as naive. We see all the other characters aware of what's going around them but Wylan just gives off big "I'm innocent" vibes (even though he's not). But, we see so much growth in him as well and he begins to mature.
Jesper: I find Jesper super funny in both the first and second books. He's probably one of the only characters who acknowledge his flaws and he is trying to work through these flaws. I love his banter with Wylan; they have such a funny friendship going on.
Nina: She has such cool powers and she's cunning. Combine those two factors together and you get a total badass character. Nina is pretty different from Inej in the sense that she has more self-confidence and she isn't afraid to use her physical appearance as a weapon. I would also consider her a partial anti-heroine since she is willing to go to the gray area in order to get what she wants.
Matthias: He's not my favourite character. Honestly, I forgot about him for probably the majority of the second book. I don't really like his romantic relationship with Nina since I think it's completely unnecessary especially when Nina is such a great character.
Writing Style/Narrative
The writing style is absolutely brilliant. I don't even know what else to say. I'm full-on starstruck. Bardugo captures every single aspect of the book in a very descriptive yet poetic style. Her world-building is spectacular. I love the Grisha world because it comes off as an incredibly realistic world where all the six characters live. Just like the first book, the second book is narrated in six POVs but we see more narration from Kaz and Inej since they are considered as the main characters. Again, Bardugo is BRILLIANT.
Critics:
NONE. This book deserves no critics. A PHENOMENAL STORY.
Final Review:
Where do I even start? EVERYTHING about this book is literally life-changing. I've never read such a deep, complex world and character-building book ever. It is just so well written in every single aspect. I definitely recommend this book to every single reader out there, young adults and adults. This book deserves all the praise it can get because it just renders me speechless. It's that good.
Happy Reading!
Cheers,
Jessica :)
